Charles Manson: Cult Leader and Mastermind of Tate-LaBianca Murders
Charles Milles Manson was born on November 12, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His early life was marked by a turbulent upbringing, including time spent in and out of correctional facilities. Manson's troubled youth eventually led him to a life of crime, and he spent a significant portion of his early adulthood behind bars. In the late 1960s, Manson emerged as a charismatic and enigmatic figure, attracting a group of followers known as the Manson Family. Manson preached a bizarre and apocalyptic ideology that blended elements of pop culture, racism, and his own delusions. He believed in an impending race war, which he termed "Helter Skelter" after The Beatles' song, and he convinced his followers that they needed to trigger this war by committing a series of gruesome murders. In August 1969, Manson directed several of his followers to carry out a series of brutal killings. The most notorious of these was the murder of actress Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant, and four others at her residence. The following night, Manson Family members murdered Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their home. The brutal and seemingly random nature of the crimes shocked the nation. Manson and several of his followers were arrested in October 1969. During the trial that followed, Manson exhibited erratic behavior and often disrupted court proceedings. In 1971, he and several of his followers were convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Charles Manson spent the rest of his life in prison, his name forever associated with the gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders. He died on November 19, 2017, at the age of 83. Despite his death, Manson's legacy endures as one of the most infamous cult leaders and criminal masterminds in modern history.
